There was a time that I believed in John McCain. I hoped against hope, even though I would vote for Al Gore regardless, that he would secure the 2000 nomination in the Republican primaries. I watched with shock and horror as Bush and Rove unleashed a campaign of lies against a war hero. I felt nothing but sympathy for McCain. He was the victim of the worst kind of politics.
In 2000, I was stupid and uninformed. John McCain was then, as he is now, the crassest of opportunists who will adopt whatever political persona necessary to win the White House. He was never a moderate. He was never an honorable politician. He sure as hell was never a maverick.
How can a free market ideologue be a maverick? How can a shoot first, ask questions later war monger be a maverick? How can a fiscally irresponsible tax cutter be a maverick? How can a politician who has made a career out of coddling big business be a maverick?
In the other highlight of the debate, Joe Biden ripped into the idea of John McCain: Maverick.

Sarah Palin: Still a Liar

While fighting an unnecessary war in Iraq, George W. Bush and John McCain decided that Afghanistan wasn't that important. Sure, that's the country where Al Qaeda was trained and where the government actually hosted Bin Laden. Not relevant. We beat up the Taliban and decided to head off to Iraq.
Except, we didn't finish off the Taliban and we never did catch Osama Bin Laden. You know, the guy who was in charge of the most powerful terrorist organization in the world when this organization's members flew two planes into the World Trade Center, one plane into the Pentagon, and crashed another in Pennsylvania? The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001? Perhaps you remember them?
Afghanistan is in bad shape. While we were away deposing a tin pot dictator who posed no threat to our national interests, the Taliban has experienced a resurgence. The government of Afghanistan and the coalition forces are in trouble. How do we proceed from here?
Afghanistan was discussed at the debate and Sarah Palin had her chance to shine on the issue. Naturally, being a Republican and a conservative she chose to lie. I'm not concerned that she called General McKiernan by the wrong name. Hell, there are a lot of names out there and it's easy to misspeak. It does bother me that she chose to lie about what he said. At this point, it's hard to take anything that Sarah Palin says seriously. When someone is shown over and over again to be a liar, how can you ever believe anything they say? How can the media continue to take this harpy seriously? How can she be treated as anything other than a joke?
One little myth of Palin's moderation is that she supports benefits for same sex couple. That's funny. In the 2006 election for Governor of Alaska, she had something different to say.
Witness another lie.

(S)he would support a ballot question that would deny benefits to homosexual couples. "I believe that honoring the family structure is that important," Palin said.Put aside the bigotry if you can and focus on the lie. Perhaps she is as dumb as we think she is. If she thinks she can say whatever she wants depending upon the audience watching ... apparently she can.

Sarah Palin: Professional Liar

Republicans are brazen. Even if they don't know how to use it (I'm looking at you Senator McCain ... moron), they are very aware that we are in the age of the Internet. Virtually everything a politician says is on audio or video somewhere on the net. So it really does take a special kind of person to stand up in front of the country, knowing that they'll be caught, during a debate no less, and lie, lie, lie.
Granted, when you're running on a conservative platform in the middle of an economic crisis, you have to avoid the issues as much as possible. That's just good politics I suppose. No issues? Time to lie.
Sarah Palin stood at that podium last night and claimed that Joe Biden supported McCain's Iraq policies right up until the moment he joined the Obama campaign. This isn't an exaggeration. This isn't Gov. Palin misspeaking. It is a calculated lie. TPM Election Central punks out the McCain campaign for this lie.

George W. Bush? Anyone? Anyone?

Considering that they both support virtually every decision that George W. Bush ever made, why are Sarah Palin and John McCain running so hard from him? OK, I guess the answer to that question is rather easy. Who would embrace a President with approval ratings in the 20s?
It's interesting that McCain and Palin will criticize Bush for blunders in the execution of his decisions, but they don't seem ready to criticize the decisions themselves. Frankly, it's a given at this point that a conservative run government will botch even the best intentioned plan.
Ultimately, botching things isn't the problem. It's what they set out to do in the first place. The Iraq war wasn't a mistake because of the Bush blunders. Those just made it worse. The mistake was getting us into the war in the first place.
Is McCain different than George W. Bush? Joe Biden doesn't think so.

Joe Biden Wears His Heart on His Sleeve

There's an awful lot to like about Joe Biden. I have had some major disagreements with the good Senator on policy issues over the years, but you have to respect his passion. He believes in the power of public service. He believes in the ability of the American government to do good for the American people. He believes.
His passion often manifests itself in moments of raw emotion. What a pleasure it has been for anyone who has been fortunate enough to seen him question someone in the Senate that he believes has brought dishonor upon this country! His clinched teeth questions are always great and never less than inspiring.
His passion extends beyond his public works and is evident whenever he speaks of his family. It's been almost 36 years since he lost his wife and daughter in a car accident just weeks after his first election to the Senate. It's clear that even now, the memories of that accident, the pain of watching his young sons lying in a hospital suffering from life threatening injuries, are never far from the front of his mind.
At tonight's debate, Senator Biden showed an emotional glimpse of the Father behind the Senator. Sarah Palin's reaction to this special moment? More talk about being a maverick.
