It's the UAW's Fault

8 Random Items for 12/23/2008 #4

Sure, Toyota doesn't actually own any UAW shops, but still, if they are losing money on their automobile business for the first time in seven decades, it must be the fault of the unions, right?

The Right Decision

8 Random Items for 12/19/2008 #7

George W. Bush has made the right decision on the auto industry bailout. How scary is it that in the remaining days of his administration, he seems rational and the congressional Republicans have gone crazy? Their party is in the process of a hard right turn, and that will doom them to irrelevance. I say it again, "Whig".

The Auto Industry Woes

8 Random Items for 12/18/2008 #1

46,000 auto workers for Chrysler will be out of work until January 19th as Chrysler temporarily shuts down all of its manufacturing plants. Ford will be shutting down 10 plants for an extra week in January. GM is halting construction of a new plant related to the Chevy Volt ... the car they are hoping will save the company.

It's just a bunch of blue-collar jobs, most of them union anyway. Who cares what happens to them?

The Union Does Their Part

8 Random Items for 12/3/2008 #7

So, the UAW is willing to work with the major car companies to help them secure the government financing they need to stay afloat. They will even reopen contract negotiations. Once all this is over, and prosperity has returned to the economy, do you think the companies will be willing to reopen the contract to give the workers a bigger slice of the pie? Of course not.

Remember, when the company wants to renegotiate a labor contract, it's for the health of the business. When the workers want to do it, it's because they have no respect for a contract.
