There is no doubt that the practice of issuing (signing) statements can be abused. Constitutional signing statements should not be used to suggest that the President will disregard statutory requirements on the basis of policy disagreements.

What? You mean the President doesn't have the power to override Congressional legislation simply because he puts pen to paper to make it so?

We can pretend that Republicans and conservatives are people of principle who simply believe that the constitution should be read literally, what is known as the strict constructionist argument, but the truth is they are without principle. They read the constitution overly broad when Republicans are in power and as very limited when a Democrat is in power. How else can you explain their view that the President has near monarchical powers?
