Did I mention Hillary Clinton is your new Secretary of State? Did I mention she won her confirmation vote 94 - 2? Did I mention that the opposition of Sen. David Vitter (R-Diapers) and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-Moron) had no effect on the people of this country outside of those few yahoos, quiet possibly in South Carolina and Louisiana, who are too stupid to realize how much better things were in this country when the Clintons ran things? I can't remember.

So, congratulations to Secretary Clinton. I have no doubt you will make us proud.

Seriously, is there anyone in this country who cares that Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Sen. David "Diaper" Vitter (R-LA) voted against Hillary Clinton's confirmation as Secretary of State? What was their accomplishment? Looking stupid? Where does the Republican Party find the morons they get elected to public office?

8 Thoughts About the Election of Barack Obama #2

So, I supported John Edwards, but then, well, virtually no one else did, so he dropped out. All Democrats were faced with an incredible decision.

We had not one, but two, "rock star" candidates. One was, perhaps, the most distinguished First Lady since Eleanor Roosevelt and was now a rising star in the Senate. The other was the son of an American woman and a Kenyan man who had wowed not just the Party, but the entire country with his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and was now a rising star in the Senate. Both would make excellent Presidents.

Initially, I was fairly certain that I was supporting Sen. Clinton, but I was a soft supporter. I could be convinced. Still, I had a rather large reservation about Sen. Obama that I could not reconcile. I have no problem with bi-partisanship as a cheap political stunt to convince the "undecided" voters, but I suspected that Obama was the real deal. He meant it. He thought he could work with the Republicans.

While waiting in line though, I thought about the enthusiasm of the Obama "true believers". I thought about his ability to stir our emotions. His ability to inspire us to become better Americans. I liked that he was still a fresh face. Unlike Hillary, I didn't feel like I already knew everything there is to know about him. As for the issues, I liked Clinton better on health care and Obama better on the war, however, it was basically a wash. I voted for Obama and I've supported him ever since.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 15 - 1 today to recommend confirmation of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Of course, to most of us, this is a no-brainer. You might be wondering, who would possibly oppose her nomination?

That would be that family value Republican, a diaper fetishist, and a man who has spent many a paycheck on the companionship of prostitutes, Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana.

Again, not really any of my business, but I love to needle a hypocrite.

Diaper fetish or not, John Amato hits the nail on the head when he refers to Vitter as a "smug jackass".

There are a few people in American politics whose name I hoped to never hear again. You can put Ken Starr near the top of that list. Starr is one of the most revolting figures the right wing has ever put in front of the American people. The disservice he did the country during his investigation, an investigation that cleared Bill and Hillary Clinton of any wrongdoing in relation to the Whitewater scandal, by asking the President, an adult human being, about his sex life still reverberates. He was the point man in an attempt to overthrow a legitimately elected President. These same people will now come after Obama, no matter how nice he plays with the right. They always have another Ken Starr waiting in the wings, full of righteous BS.

Well, the Blagojevich scandal continues to burn, but the press is once again showing their collective rank stupidity. Here's how the media critics at County Fair put it ...

The scandal "may or may not implicate members of Congress." That's a completely meaningless thing to "report." Klein may as well write that the scandal "may or may not implicate" the Easter Bunny. It's just as true!

Let's put the facts on the table, there is nothing in this case that even remotely suggests any wrongdoing by the President-Elect and his staff. However, the press has decided, while egged on by Neil Boortz, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and other bottom feeders, that because this case involves Illinois, and Obama is from Illinois, then somehow Obama could be tainted by it.

What are they basing this on? If there is any taint from this scandal on Obama, it is because of stories like this in the press. Again, there is nothing in this scandal that has implicated Obama or his staff in anything. So why would this taint him?

If I were Obama, I'd have long conversation with my new Secretary of State about what happens when the press decides there's a scandal despite the facts. They can bring the business of this country to a screeching halt.

An Enhanced Senate Role

An article in yesterday's New York Times mentions the possibility that, if Hilary Clinton doesn't accept the position of Secretary of State with the Obama administration, a new leadership position might be created for her in the Senate. This isn't necessarily a bad idea, but I don't think a new role is needed. I think she would fit perfectly into an existing role. Harry Reid should step down and her colleagues should install her as the new majority leader.

Hilary Clinton is no shrinking violet. She is a tough and effective partisan warrior that has the ability to simultaneously push a progressive agenda down the throats of the conservative Republicans while wooing the more moderate members to our side of a legislative debate. She is one of the most popular members of our party. She received over 18 million votes in the primary. Obama still won, but don't forget, it was a narrow victory.

As a majority leader in the mold of LBJ, Hilary could become one of the most powerful Democrats ever. She is practically guaranteed her seat for life in the Senate already. She could shape progressive legislation for a generation. The people who put Barack Obama in the White House deserve a majority leader who isn't afraid of being tough. Someone who is looking to pick a fight with those who stand against a progressive agenda. Someone who will get things done. That person is Hilary Clinton.

Of course, she'd make a great Secretary of State too.

Reports are that Obama will offer Hilary Clinton the Secretary of State position after Thanksgiving. I'm on record as saying she would make an excellent pick. That said, it will become a circus unlike any other. The press loves some drama and they love to build it around the two people they seem to hate most, Bill and Hilary Clinton.

The press has gone as far as saying that the Clintons will set up a shadow government at the state department. There's no telling where this derangement comes from. It's as irrational as their love for George W. Bush in the 2000 campaign. None the less, it is what it is.

Since the press hasn't done their job where the Clintons are concerned, I think the following might surprise you: the Clintons were cleared of any wrong doing in the Whitewater case. Did you know that? As recently as 2002, the Washington Post for example, was still suggesting they did something wrong, even though a number of official investigations, by Republicans, could find nothing to charge them with. Not one, single, solitary charge.

We'll see more examples of this crap in the days and weeks to come. Just remember, it's all bull.

I guess I don't understand why Hillary Clinton would want to be Secretary of State. That's not to say I don't think she would make a great one, it's just that I think she would be better served by either seeking one of the opening Supreme Court justice slots, or even better, assuming leadership for the party in the Senate. She could amass the same power as LBJ in the Senate. How awesome would that be?

She worked as first lady to bring health care to all Americans (ruined by Republicans). She proved herself a fighter standing up to the most vicious and despicable right wing assault yet unleashed. She is now one of our most capable and determined Senators.

Hillary Clinton came as close as you can come to being the nominee for President, and not actually receive the nomination. She accomplished this, not because some old guy at the top of the ticket wanted to shake things up and maybe still a Clinton vote or two, not simply because she's a woman, but because she's among our best. The prom queen cannot live up to that standard.
