I Wish I Had Been There!

Athens based rock band R.E.M. (the greatest American band in the history of rock music, bar none) held a rally for Jim Martin recently. R.E.M.'s involvement in politics over the history of the band is proof that celebrities can offer something meaningful to the political process. Every member of the band is thoughtful and well spoken. They involve themselves heavily in local politics and state politics. Most importantly, they have always been willing to put their money where their mouths are. They have never been content with just preaching from a stage. So, tonight, raise a glass to R.E.M. for doing their part to rid this nation of the public service of Saxby Chambliss.

Do You Remember?

Do you remember Bill Clinton? He was President from 1993 - 2001. It wasn't as eventful as the current Presidency of course. There was no financial crisis. In fact, the economy did very well. There wasn't a never ending war. Clinton and his team believed in practicing diplmacy so such things were avoidable. There was a major terrorist attack in New York City, but instead of dropping bombs on anyone he could think of, he concentrated on catching the perps and bringing them to justice.
Sure, he had sexual relations with someone he shouldn't have, but, honestly, so what?
I miss that guy. Glad to see him in Georgia stumping for Jim Martin.

One Down, Two to Decide

Congratulations are in order to new Alaska Senator Mark Begich. He has (finally) been declared the winner over his Republican opponent, Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens has served Alaska in the Senate seemingly forever. He is the longest serving Republican Senator ever. He is one of the most crooked politicians in the Senate today. Bye bye Ted and don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

We have the recount in the race for the Minnesota seat formerly held by one of our greatest Senators, Paul Wellstone. The race is between Al Franken and Norm Coleman. Naturally, the Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure that as few votes as possible are counted. They are making accusations against the Democratic Secretary of State in Minnesota. Well, they are accusing him of being crooked without actually offering anything resembling evidence that he is crooked. Typical. It is believed that Franken has a very good shot in a recount.
In Georgia, we have the runoff election between Senator Saxby Chambliss and Jim Martin. The American people deserve a quality progressive like Jim Martin in the Senate. Saxby Chambliss is a farce and should be ridicules and laughed out of office. Let's give the people the Senator they deserve. (More on this race later.)

Thank You Mr. Buckley, But ...

I don't think there's any doubt that if Libertarian Allen Buckley hadn't been in the GA Senate race Saxby Chambliss would have won. (I love third parties to the right ... hate them to the left.) Senate Guru at Tondee's Tavern points to an AJC interview where Buckley, who refuses to give an outright endorsement to Jim Martin, seems to indicate that he prefers Martin to Chambliss, especially on the bailout and on civil liberties.
Is this a worthwhile endorsement? I doubt it. Most Libertarians had no idea who Buckley was to start with. They just voted for him because of the (L) next to his name on the ballot. I'm not even sure they were that excited by Bob Barr. (Were they not more excited by Texas' anti-war racist Ron Paul anyway?)
Obviously, I'm okay with any endorsement that helps send Jim Martin to Washington D.C., but I don't consider the reception of a libertarian endorsement anything for a Democrat to cheer about. Sure, Libertarians tend to be good on social issues, but ultimately, they always seem to find the position on taxes (low, or eliminate them) more compelling than their positions on basic civil rights whenever they find themselves voting. I just can't get behind a party whose basic premise seems to be every man for himself. Selfishness is never a virtue.

It just occurred to me that everyone who reads this blog were to donate five dollars each to Jim Martin on his Act Blue web page, we might raise almost fifteen dollars for his bid to unseat the odious Saxby Chambliss.
