While fighting an unnecessary war in Iraq, George W. Bush and John McCain decided that Afghanistan wasn't that important. Sure, that's the country where Al Qaeda was trained and where the government actually hosted Bin Laden. Not relevant. We beat up the Taliban and decided to head off to Iraq.

Except, we didn't finish off the Taliban and we never did catch Osama Bin Laden. You know, the guy who was in charge of the most powerful terrorist organization in the world when this organization's members flew two planes into the World Trade Center, one plane into the Pentagon, and crashed another in Pennsylvania? The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001? Perhaps you remember them?

Afghanistan is in bad shape. While we were away deposing a tin pot dictator who posed no threat to our national interests, the Taliban has experienced a resurgence. The government of Afghanistan and the coalition forces are in trouble. How do we proceed from here?

Afghanistan was discussed at the debate and Sarah Palin had her chance to shine on the issue. Naturally, being a Republican and a conservative she chose to lie. I'm not concerned that she called General McKiernan by the wrong name. Hell, there are a lot of names out there and it's easy to misspeak. It does bother me that she chose to lie about what he said.
