Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) says ...

8 Words of Wisdom for Week Ending 4/3/2009 #5
I think what we need to never forget Keith is that here in Washington we have enormously powerful special interests. You know the financial institutions in the last ten years spent five billion dollars so that we can deregulate Wall Street and that got us to where we are today.

The insurance companies and the drug companies make huge amounts of money keeping us the only nation in the industrialized world without a national health care program. So what we need to combat that enormous power of the big money interests is a strong grass roots movement.
First, let me state an obvious truth: entrenched special interests that don't represent real people are bad for America, bad for democracy. Lobbyists representing insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies (not to mention those representing the large financial firms) are not answerable to real people. They are not about helping Americans. They are about helping large corporations. It is the job of the government to serve the American people. It is not the job of American government to serve corporations. Simple enough.

Secondly, I'd like to say that grass-roots movements can work. Every American should call or write their representatives in Washington whenever they have been moved by an issue. It is essential for the long term economic health of our nation that Obama's budget priorities are preserved. The only way we can guarantee this is to rise up and make out voices heard.
