The House GOP budget would be just an April Fool’s day joke if it didn’t actually reflect the true priorities of House Republicans and what they would do if they had the votes in Congress to pass their own plan. Their budget relies on the failed economic policies that drove the U.S. economy into its deepest spiral in decades.
If House Republicans had their way and the budget they outlined today were adopted, President Obama’s economic recovery program, which is already saving and creating jobs throughout the country, would be gutted, Medicare as we know it would all but be all but eliminated, Social Security checks would be slashed and a proposed spending freeze on discretionary programs would cut essential services – from health care and support for veterans to education to job training - that Americans most depend on when the economy is in crisis. The sad thing is that the Republican budget is anything but a joke to them. It is their plan. It is a blueprint for the conservative destruction of the American dream. It represents who they are more than any phony slogan like "compassionate conservatism". We cannot forget who these people are and what they seek to accomplish.
These are the people who believe that it is the 19th century, not the 20th, that represents the ideal American economy.
These are the people who believe that economic crises are to simply be endured - the suffering of so many people be damned.
These are the people who believe that business, free of any government regulation, will run things right.
These are the people who believe that Social Security should be replaced with a national savings plan that would have destroyed the retirement of so many seniors during this crisis.
These are the people who see Medicare as a giant suck on the deficit rather than a mechanism that not only enhances the quality of life of many seniors, but one that prevents them from falling into poverty due to medical expenses.
These are the people who are fundamentally opposed to assisting Americans in need, not because they don't believe government programs are capable, but simply because their ideology doesn't allow for it.
