Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) says ...

8 Words of Wisdom for Week Ending 3/27/2009 #2
In 1935, we passed the Wagner Act that promoted unionization and allowed unions to flourish, and at the time we were at around 20 percent unemployment. So tell me again why we can't do this in a recession? ... This is the time to do it. This is exactly the time we should be insisting on a fairer playing field for people to organize themselves.
People don't know their history, which requires that liberal and progressive politicians seek to educate when presenting their policy proposals. Any student of US History knows that unionization helped usher in the greatest period of shared prosperity that this nation has ever seen. Unfortunately, conservatives have been effective over the past 30 years when attacking unions with falsehoods and innuendo. The Employee Free Choice Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation facing this Congress. It is far too important to allow conservatives to lie with impunity about it.

As progressives, it is our job to state the truth about unionization, and to make the historical argument that backs up our position.
