Republicans are predicting that government-run insurance will be cheaper, more popular than private insurance, and more politically popular for Democrats.

This is why they are running scared of universal health care. Once implemented, much like Social Security and Medicare, they'll never be able to get rid of it because for the vast majority of Americans, it will work better than the current system.

It can't be any fun being a Republican. You have to constantly oppose everything that actually works lest it make government look good.
