The Rule of Law

8 Random Items for 11/20/2008 #8

In the United States of America, you do not hold prisoners indefinitely. You do not hold them without the right to a full jury trial. You do not allow anonymous, unidentified people to make accusations against them. Our constitution does not allow it.

This is the big Bush problem. Every time a Gitmo prisoner gets in front of a judge, the Bush administration is smacked down. It has happened yet again. As for the judge, he is not a liberal. He has been sympathetic to the Bush argument that the President is a virtual dictator (I';m paraphrasing) in a time of war. The Bush administration has somehow managed to go too far for Judge Leon.

If these men are who the Bush administration claims they are, if they are as dangerous as they say, then the Bush administration's refusal to follow even the most basic tenants of American law is even more reprehensible because it will be the Bushies who are responsible for their release.
