There have been few Presidents in our history more quotable than Franklin Roosevelt. He took office on the eve of the greatest financial crisis this nation has ever faced. He led the world in the fight against the greatest threat to freedom ever seen, fascism, and defeated it. For all the talk about liberals being socialists and communists, Roosevelt saved capitalism in this country.

While he was neither a perfect man nor a perfect President, as we will explore throughout the rest of the year, he was one of our best. Like Lincoln, he held our union together at a time when it was threatening to bust apart. The foundation of the peace and prosperity that we were so fortunate to experience throughout the 20th century can be attributed to Roosevelt. It was a triumph of liberalism and it's ability to get government to work for the people.

We have a new President about to take office in the midst of the worst financial crisis this nation has faced since the days of Roosevelt. He takes office after a period of 28 years, since the election of Ronald Reagan, that has seen the work of Roosevelt attacked and at times, destroyed. The foundation on which our middle class prosperity is based is crumbling to pieces.

My sincerest hope is that Barack Obama will be that leader, like Roosevelt, that lays a foundation of progress for a new century.
